Hybrid leader, Toyota and BMW have joined forces in search of a better battery.
The two automakers announced today a partnership for research in basic research to develop the next generation of lithium-ion battery cell velocity.
As part of this partnership will BMW offer its "clean diesel" engines for Toyota cars sold in Europe. The 1.6-liter and 2.0-liter diesel engines are planned for certain models of Toyota in Europe, beginning in 2014, the companies said.
The joint study is designed to give both companies a competitive edge to the core technology in a cleaner, fuel-efficient vehicles, company representatives said today at a joint press conference at the Tokyo Motor Show.
"Battery technology is crucial for hybrid technology, but also for the future of individual mobility," said BMW board member Klaus Draeger at the press conference. "Who has the best batteries in terms of performance, price and quality in their vehicles will win more customers."
The "medium to long term," research will seek to develop better batteries for both hybrid and electric cars, he said. The Memorandum of Understanding between the companies allows for collaboration on other projects.
Toyota is at an advanced stage in the performance of hybrids next year to include a family of Prius vehicles. It has also partnered with Tesla Motors, which supplies the electric propulsion system, including Panasonic battery cells for the upcoming Toyota RAV4 Electric Vehicle.
BMW is keen to bring hybrid and electric car technology to the premium category automatically. Earlier this year unveiled the i8 i3 city car and sedan concepts that the first car designed from scratch as a plug-in hybrids.
