Las Vegas: Many people who have Microsoft's new Windows 8 operating system tried without touchscreen have hated it because of the inability to touch and swipe commands to use to get things going. Now a company has a digital pen to allow people to use Windows 8 on their old monitors for less than the cost of buying a new touch-enabled computer.

The device was unveiled this week at the International CES, the annual showcase in Las Vegas for the latest smartphones, tablet computers and other consumer electronics.

WHAT IT IS: E Fun, a West Covina, California based company, has come up with the Apes Touch8, a wireless pen that works in tandem with an attachment that is connected to the Windows computer's USB port.

HOW IT WORKS: The Annex, which is really an infrared and ultrasonic receiver, magnetic clips on the side of the screen, which can be as large as 17 inches (43 centimeters) diagonally. The pen sends an infrared beam from its tip. The receiver sends the attachment pin signals to the computer, which interprets the exact location.

Pressing down on the pen results in a separate ultrasonic signal, which corresponds to a touch screen sensor when touching it. Just like that, you can swipe and tap your way through Windows 8. The pen works on a watch battery which should last about 500 hours and is replaceable.

WHY IT'S HOT: Windows 8, Microsoft Corp. attempt to desktop and laptop computers such as tablet computers, was released in October to mixed reviews. A major problem is the fact that many of the functions of a touch-screen monitor is required, making the experience unpleasant for people with older machines. Monkeys Touch8 provides a way for people with older computers to the newer touch-based features to experience.

AVAILABILITY: The pen is to be on sale in North America to go by the end of March for $ 80.
